Kirby was born in Omagh, County Tyrone, in 1989. He began playing Gaelic football with his local club, Errigal Ciaran. Kirby quickly rose through the ranks and made his debut for the Tyrone senior football team in 2008. He quickly became a regular member of the team and helped Tyrone win the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in 2008, 2010, and 2012.

In addition to his success with Tyrone, Kirby has also been a successful Gaelic footballer at club level.
